Soapworks, by First Base has won first place for ‘Activation’ and ‘Community Engagement’ at The Pineapples Awards. Organised by The Developer magazine, in association with the Design Council and hosted at the Festival of Place event in July, The Pineapples commend developments and places where people thrive and want to live, work, play, shop and learn.
The Centre of Gravity exhibition at Soapworks won the ‘Activation’ category, an award which looks to celebrate meanwhile projects, installations, pop-ups and initiatives that enhance the life of a place. Judges were looking for a singular work or event that has contributed to the life of a place, either through its fostering of community, welcoming visitors and attracting tenants, or generally encouraging people to dwell, live, work, connect, learn and play. Soapworks also won an award for ‘Community Engagement’ in acknowledgement of meaningful community engagement that contributes to the creation of a place. The award commends engagement that is either digital or physical, with judges considering how the initiative connected meaningfully with stakeholders and citizens and how their feedback contributed to the design and development process. The entries for ‘Activation’ and ‘Community Engagement’ at Soapworks were presented live to judges at The Festival of Place event 12-16 July.
